From boardroom to purpose-driven pod
After spending a decade and a half leading creative for global brands, the business of making ads began to lose its luster. I yearned to create something meaningful. Something that felt deep, wild, and alive. Something that brought the best people to the table, and game-changing creative to life.
A saltwater prayer, wild animals, and a leap of faith
I grew up surrounded by cornfields, and at 19, found myself salmon fishing in Victoria, British Columbia. Suddenly, a pod of orcas surfaced 30 feet from our boat, black-and-white giants cutting through the water like living gods. This experience profoundly impacted me, and firmly rooted me in the Pacific Northwest.
Cut to 2008; my wife Heather and I were kayaking in Friday Harbor, Washington. We’d been talking about starting a business that honored our values of spirit, creativity, and family. Prayer bundle in hand, we offered it to the ocean. And once again, an orca pod surfaced nearby to say hello. I like to think they were also saying, “yes, this is your path, embrace it.”
The soul of Orca
The orca heralds our personal values: family, love, longevity, harmony, travel, community, and protection. The orca roams far, fierce yet devoted to family and always returning home to nurture and protect the pod. Swimming together in perfect synchrony, orcas show us the power of working together, sharing our songs, and navigating the greatest seas of possibility.
